We’re all familiar with the lyrics of ‘Chim-Chim Cher-ee’ from Disney’s iconic film, Mary Poppins – “A sweep is as lucky, as lucky can be!” – so we know that chimney sweeps are considered as bringing good fortune. Customs vary according to region – in some parts of the country, to tap a sweep’s shoulder, or touch his clothing, is lucky. Elsewhere, shaking his hand is important, or even walking in his shadow. Just why a chimney sweep is lucky is a bone of contention, however. While it is clear that the belief has its roots in folklore, various stories abound. One tale has it that a sweep grabbed the reins of a panicking horse, saving the carriage it was pulling from an accident. The passenger was none other than the King himself, who thereupon declared that all chimney sweeps should be treated with honour. True or not, the belief in the luck of the sweep lives on, especially on a wedding day when it is considered good fortune for the bride or groom to see a sweep. And maybe there is some truth in this…one marriage that has certainly stood the test of time is that of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh – and if you look at film footage of Prince Philip leaving Kensington Palace for Westminster Abbey on their wedding day in 1947, there is clearly a chimney sweep in the crowd behind him!
